No device? No problem β€” there are free programs to get a phone, computer, and internet access.

Start Here

Welcome. Let's Get Started.

No matter where you are β€” whether you've never used a computer or you use AI every day β€” there's a place for you here. No jargon. No judgment. Just simple steps.

Computer Basics

Start here if you're new to technology

Using a Computer or Tablet

  • The mouse or trackpad moves the cursor β€” click once to select, double-click to open
  • The keyboard types letters; press Enter to confirm or go to the next line
  • The address bar at the top of the browser is where you type website addresses
  • Use Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste (Cmd+C / Cmd+V on Mac)

Using a Smartphone

  • Tap once to open apps or links; tap and hold to see more options
  • Swipe up to scroll down a page; pinch two fingers to zoom in or out
  • The App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android) is where you download free apps
  • Wi-Fi uses your home internet; mobile data uses your phone plan β€” Wi-Fi is free

Getting Online

  • You need Wi-Fi or mobile data to use AI tools β€” most are free on Wi-Fi
  • Public libraries offer free Wi-Fi and computers β€” great if you don't have home internet
  • Many community centers, VA facilities, and workforce centers also offer free Wi-Fi
  • Ask your phone carrier about Lifeline β€” a program that offers discounted internet for qualifying individuals

Staying Safe Online

  • Never share your Social Security number, passwords, or bank info with an AI tool
  • Legitimate AI tools will never ask for payment to answer a question
  • If something feels off, close the tab and go directly to the official website
  • Use a strong password (mix of letters, numbers, symbols) and don't reuse passwords

AI Basics & How to Ask Questions

What AI is and how to talk to it

What is AI, in plain terms?

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a computer program that has read billions of pages of text and learned to answer questions, write, explain things, and help you solve problems β€” like having a very knowledgeable assistant available 24/7. It's not magic, it's not perfect, but it's incredibly useful once you know how to use it.

Talk to it like a person

You don't need special commands. Just type naturally: 'Can you help me write a cover letter for a warehouse job?' works perfectly.

Give it context

The more you tell it, the better the answer. Instead of 'help me with housing,' try 'I'm a Veteran in Minnesota looking for transitional housing β€” what programs exist?'

Ask it to simplify

If the answer is too complicated, just say 'Can you explain that in simpler terms?' or 'Give me a bullet list instead.' It will happily redo it.

It's okay to try again

If you don't like the answer, say 'Try again' or 'Make it shorter' or 'Make it sound more professional.' AI doesn't get offended β€” it just tries again.
